40 per cent rise in long-term youth unemployment

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released data that shows that the amount of long term unemployed young people has risen by more than 40 per cent.

72,000 18- to 24-year-olds have been out of work for more than two years and of this figure 17 per cent are currently unemployed. Though on the whole the number of young people in employment is up 1.4 per cent in the three months to June 2010 compared to the previous quarter.
