Dear reader,
Lancaster and District Womens Aid (LWDA) secured funding in July 2009 to provide a children and young people's service for under 18's across the District who have been affected by domestic abuse and violence in the home.
Since its official start in October 2009 we have been overwhelmed by referrals and offered support to over 100 children in the area. LDWA offer one to one support and group work. This includes a unique art psychotherapy one to one service across the District in partnership with Leeds university and Sheffield PCT.
Two women are murdered each week in the UK by a current or former partner yet little is mentioned of the effects of violence on the children. Even less is heard about the horrific child deaths in similar circumstances. LDWA are committed to developing services, under the name CHILL, to young people in the Lancaster, Morecambe and rural District. We are currently developing a holistic package that enables families to recover from the devastating effects of abusive and violent relationships , together.
Meanwhile the children's services development worker has been recruiting volunteers in order to take children and young people on activities based sessions, which include weekly swimming sessions, summer activities and trips to local events. We have secured small amounts of funding to enable us to fund these activities but unfortunately we need to be able to transport the children to the sessions safely. All our workers and volunteers are enhanced CRB checked and fully trained. However we desperately need resources in order to continue these sessions and this is where you can help.
We need:
- Good quality baby/ children's car seats, booster seats, art and collage materials, swimming equipment, games equipment
- Volunteers
- Vouchers for packed lunches, food, entrance tickets to local attractions and local money off vouchers
All these thigns will have a huge impact on the lives of local people.
